Plasma Burn
A downloadable game
The Empire is breaking. The Century War turned Earth into ash and boiled away her oceans, and the Empress signed a peace treaty with the envoy of the Wxkyl, in humiliating defeat. Once, a common enemy bound humanity. Cruel oppressions were forgiven as all united against the Wxkyl. Now, the Great Houses vie for supremacy, and eyes of the Empress are everywhere, as fearful of her own janissaries as of the Great Houses. The corporations have arisen, their coffers filled from the war, their eyes set only on exploitation.
Humanity groans under the weight of subjugation. The civilised worlds offer little else but indentured servitude for the Houses, the corporations, or the Imperial services in hopes of clawing out a life from the uncaring void and the fragmenting Empire. Humanity bleeds and moans in the Empire’s death throes.
The Fringes are shattered remnants of glory, once great worlds ruined by isolation or a century’s warfare. The occasional patrol seeking tithes at gunpoint are their only connection to the Empire. Jump Gates that could carry a ship from Earth to the Empire’s border in the space of a week were shattered in the Century War, leaving only the core worlds linked by the Gates. For the Fringes, travelling via the onerous jump drive a few parsecs per week is the only option. The Fringes are cruel and isolated worlds, but there, on the edge of humanity, freedom may be found. One could leave their past and make a difference, even if it must be at the end of a gun
